Paul Merson: That striker could save Arsenal £70m

Former player Paul Merson believes Mikel Arteta has the signings he needs in the current squad.

In the January transfer window, Arsenal and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reached an agreement to terminate the contract ahead of time. Previously, the Gabon striker was stripped of the captain’s armband and excluded from the club’s plans for being undisciplined. The 32-year-old star then joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

Arsenal have been trying to find another striker to replace. They see Dusan Vlahovic as the number one target to recruit. However, when Juventus entered the game, they successfully surpassed the Gunners to own Vlahovic for £ 68 million. The Emirates Stadium team then turned to Alexander Isak, but in the end they refused to activate the striker’s £70 million release clause.

Will Martinelli play at number 9?

Recently, Paul Merson commented that Gabriel Martinelli will solve the problem of a key striker for the Gunners: “If I were Arteta, I would let Martinelli play at the highest level. Arsenal can spend a lot of money on a striker, but the player they are looking for may already be at the club.

Martinelli is mobile and agile – he has what it takes. He will be playing until the end of the season, and could save Arsenal £70m .”

The Brazilian star, after returning from injury, is having a sublime 2021/22 campaign. He has scored 4 goals and 2 assists in 14 Premier League appearances.
