COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The North Carolina fencing team traveled to the United States Air Force Academy over the weekend to compete against other top collegiate fencing programs at the 2021 Western Invitational. The men’s team finished with a 6-2 record, while the women’s team ended up at 5-4.
The Tar Heels were forced to hit the ground running on Saturday, facing off against reigning NCAA Champion Notre Dame and 2019 National Champion Columbia in their first two matches. After the challenging start the Tar Heels were able to hit their stride. The men’s team went a perfect 6-0 and the women’s team went 5-2 following their opening two losses.
The Tar Heels were especially dominant in men’s sabre, ending the weekend with a combined record of 51-21 across all matches.
The Western Open was the Tar Heels final meet of 2021. North Carolina will return to the strips on January 16th at the Penn State Duals in State College, Pa.
